Your favorite play's the thing! You can use any adaptation of the play for your icons. I know it's hard to find source material for plays that only ever were in theaters, it's much easier to find sources of plays that have been made into movies/shows/etc - so those adaptations also count! There's a good graphic novel adaptation of Goethe's Faust, for example - or, come to think of it, a great Faust musical by Randy Newman. All of these count as source material.
The other way around - the most common is probably books adapted into plays - does not count! The play should be the original.ETA: You changed my mind on the "based on a book" rule. You can icon a play even if it is based on a book. I guess if it's your favorite play, it's your favorite play.
Of course you can also just go for iconing text-only quotes from your favorite play. Go wild, have fun!
Musicals count as plays for this challenge, so does opera and ballet - basically everything that is intended to be performed on stage and has a plot. You can count different versions/adaptations/stagings of the same play as one for the purpose of this challenge.
